The source material McLean uses is the content of these Patterns. The artist identifies the Patterns with the tartans of his Scottish heritage and the Native American weaving traditions that have inspired McLean for over twenty years. Most of the patterns begin with traditional art fodder: (digitized) drawings, paintings, photos, texts, prints and found objects. Some Patterns are thoroughly digital, only being “realized” when output.
