The photographs in "Incidence" were taken at Alive n Kickin', in Santa Fe, NM, in the summer of 2002.
This series mostly features my teachers Doug and Dawn Pandorf, owners of Alive n Kickin'. Dawn works the
heavy bag, while Doug does some shadow boxing. They're both practicing Muay Thai. During this visit I
stayed with Doug and Dawn in their beautiful home, with their fun as hell dogs. We argued sexual politics,
laughed a lot, told outrageous fight stories and ate food made with love. They are two of my favorite
people in the world. I started training with Doug and Dawn about 10 years ago. Back then, the school
was called Warrior Priest Arts, and was located in a different part of town. We have a fondly recalled
history. I've never trained with nicer, more respectful people. Other people in the pictures include a
beautiful student named April and another student I don't recognize. Oh, & a single reflective self-portrait.

I've asked Doug & Dawn to send me their impressions describing how they're feeling, what they're
concentrating on, what their thought processes are, while they're practicing. I'm including their musings
with the images. "Incidence" is a show about force, vectors, distance, motion, light, red and black
and things not being where they appear to be. "Incidence" is also about dancing with one's shadow
in a hot, red world. It's an homage to a tribe of two. It's a love poem, for a girl on the periphery,
who noticed herself being noticed, who introduced herself after a fight to somebody who thought he
was invisible, who wonders what happens, if a Muse in training finds an artist on the Road, in the
world where yes is always the answer, where fighting and surrender are sparring partners...
