If such reading is suited to encyclopaedic texts, whose fragmented structure corresponds to that type of reading, it is disturbed or disoriented by genres the appreciation of which implies a less choppy reading, a familiarity to be maintained with the work, and perception of the text as an original and coherent creation… One of the great questions is whether or not digital textuality will be able to overcome the tendency toward fragmentation that characterizes both the structure of texts and the modes of reading that it proposes.

Like a pickpocket triangulating on a public display, MGT uses media to focus the mob’s attention on the action of The Freedom Loop, so the pickpocket/MGT can liberate the mob’s wallets from their owners while the mob is distracted by the action. The anti-freedom in human [interactive feature] concourse or “life,” the veritable animation of the society - our plaza - is a container. Tupperware. Anti-freedom. Or as Speed put it, “The Anti-Cruise.” …After him “his whole life.” Not just containers. Containment. Prohibition. Lanes in the Pool, to reference VIVIKI, driving the user into certain outcomes. I will call it the Octopus Effect. All the creature’s “arms,” once the prey is secured, draw the prey to the creature’s maw. Plato (427-347 B.C.) and Aristotle (384-322 B.C.), in discussing the best population size for the Greek cities of their time, pointed out that cities should be small enough for efficient administration and direct participation of the citizens in public affairs, but at the same time large enough to be able, if need be to ward off attacks by hostile neighbors, who were of course also small city-states. Aristotle in particular pointed out - as had Confucious some 150 years earlier - that too much increase of population would bring “certain poverty on the citizenry, and poverty is the cause of sedition and evil.”
